Self-Employed & Individual Tax
Your personal return covering every source of income, so nothing is missed, you claim every credit you're entitled to, and you understand what you owe.
Personal income tax return (T1) for all sources of income, including self-employment, with credits and deductions.
Who this is for
You are employed, self-employed, or both. Perhaps you have a rental suite, investment income, a side business, a move for work, or a first year of contracting. The return is not complicated so much as specific, and the specifics are where the money is.
What's included
- T1 personal income tax return, including self-employment statements (T2125)
- Deductions and credits reviewed against your actual circumstances
- Rental income, investment income, and capital gains reporting
- Home office, vehicle and equipment claims, documented properly
- GST/HST return for self-employed registrants, filed alongside
Common situations
Your first full year of self-employment has closed and you have a folder of receipts and no system.
You have employment income plus a side business, and want both handled on one return without missing deductions on either.
You bought or sold a property, or started renting out part of your home, and the return is no longer simple.
What I'll need from you
- All slips: T4, T4A, T5, T3, T5008, and any others you received
- Business income and expense records, if you are self-employed
- Prior year return and notice of assessment
- Receipts for medical, donations, tuition, child care and moving costs
- RRSP contribution receipts

Questions
-
When is my return due?
April 30 for most people. If you or your spouse were self-employed, the filing deadline is June 15 — but any balance owing is still due April 30. Interest runs from May 1 regardless of which deadline applies to your filing.
-
What can I actually deduct as a self-employed person?
Expenses incurred to earn business income: a reasonable portion of home and vehicle costs, tools and equipment, professional fees, insurance, and supplies. The test is not whether an expense is common but whether it was incurred to earn income, and whether you can show it.
-
I have not filed for a few years. Can you help?
Yes, and it is more common than you would think. We file the missing years in order and deal with the CRA from there. The situation stops getting more expensive the day the returns go in.
