Business Registration & Structuring
Starting a business or changing how it's set up? I guide you through each step, so you register with confidence and choose the structure that suits your plans.
Assisted incorporation, Business Number (BN) registration, GST/HST registration, and business structure advice.
Who this is for
You are starting something, or what you started has changed shape. The structure you choose determines how you are taxed, what you are liable for, and how much administration you carry — and changing it later costs more than choosing carefully now.
What's included
- Assisted incorporation, federal or British Columbia
- Sole proprietorship and partnership registration
- Business number (BN) and CRA program accounts: RC, RP, RT
- Structure comparison: what each option means for your tax and your risk
- Registration for the programs your structure requires from day one
Common situations
You are starting out and cannot decide between a sole proprietorship and a corporation.
The business has grown past what a sole proprietorship comfortably carries, and incorporating is now worth costing out.
You are bringing in a partner and need the structure and the program accounts set up before you begin trading.
What I'll need from you
- Proposed business name and a short description of the activity
- Details of owners, directors and intended share structure
- Expected first-year revenue, and whether you will hire
- Your SIN or existing business number, if you have one
- Whether you intend to operate outside British Columbia
How this works
- 01 Tell me what you need A short call or a message. Describe your situation in your own words.
- 02 We review your situation together I look at your previous returns, records and any letters from the CRA, then tell you plainly what is involved.
- 03 You receive a quote in writing What needs doing, in what order and by when, with the fee set out clearly and agreed before any work begins.
- 04 We complete the work Prepared, filed and explained, with me available for the questions that come afterwards.
Questions
-
Should I incorporate?
Incorporation makes sense when income exceeds what you need personally, when liability matters, or when you intend to bring in partners or sell. Below that, a sole proprietorship is often cheaper and simpler. The answer depends on numbers, not on principle.
-
Federal or provincial incorporation?
A BC incorporation is sufficient for a business operating in British Columbia. Federal incorporation gives name protection across Canada and is worth it if you will operate in several provinces — but it means registering extra-provincially in each.
-
How long does it take?
Incorporation itself is usually quick, often within a few business days. Getting the program accounts, the banking and the first filings in place is what takes the time, and it is worth doing in one sequence rather than piecemeal.
