Who this is for

You have employees, or you are about to. Payroll is the area where small errors compound quickly and quietly — deductions, remittance deadlines, and the paperwork that follows someone out the door.

  • CRA remittances and remittance deadline tracking
  • T4 and T4 Summary preparation and filing
  • Records of Employment (ROE) issued correctly and on time
  • Severance and termination pay calculations

Common situations

  • Someone is leaving and you need the final pay, the ROE and any severance calculated correctly.

  • You have been paying yourself from the corporation without source deductions and want it put right before year end.

What I'll need from you

  • Payroll register or current pay records
  • Employee details: TD1 forms, rates, start dates

Questions

  • When are T4s due?

T4 slips must be given to employees and filed with the CRA by the last day of February for the preceding calendar year. Late filing carries a penalty per slip, so it is worth starting in January.

  • How quickly does an ROE have to be issued?

Generally within five calendar days of the end of the pay period in which the interruption of earnings occurred, when filing electronically. Employees cannot claim EI without it, so delays have real consequences for them.

  • I pay myself from my corporation. Is that payroll?

If you take a salary, yes — it requires a payroll account, source deductions and a T4. If you take dividends, it does not. Which one suits you is a planning question worth answering deliberately.
